What is Breast-Conserving Surgery (BCS)?
Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) is a surgical technique that removes the cancerous tumor while preserving the natural appearance of the breast. When combined with radiotherapy, it serves as an effective alternative to modified radical mastectomy (MRM) in advanced breast cancer cases.
Findings of the New Study
A recent study using data from the SEER database revealed that BCS, combined with radiotherapy, offers comparable survival rates to MRM for patients with T1-2N3M0 breast cancer. The study included 2,124 patients and found that BCS is particularly beneficial for those with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), as it reduces surgical trauma and enables quicker initiation of radiotherapy.
